Autumn
Just because it’s getting cool it does not mean you have to give up your beautiful garden.
We grow and carry fall pansies, mums, cabbage, kale, fall blooming heather, and many other fall blooming flowers including autumn blooming clematis (this vine is amazing and beautiful. Imagine an incredible cascading white waterfall).
Creating a festive look for fall is easy if you stop in and grab a few corn stalks to add to your home. We also carry straw bales, pumpkins, and gourds and other natural items to decorate both inside and outside your home. And we love Halloween!
Winter
Winter is a fun and marvelous time to visit Blue Mount Nursery. We transform our building into a magical winter wonderland. We fill it with festive lights, ornaments, gift good; plates and statues. We have everything from Santa’s, angels, snowmen and elves to tree toppers, skirts and stockings.
We also carry the largest selection of high quality artificial trees in the area. You have to see them to believe it; they are incredibly realistic and beautiful. Other artificial items we carry are wreathes, garland and swags.
Of course we offer fresh natural items including our own custom made wreaths already decorated by one of our talented staff members, or made with items and ribbon of your choice. We have cut Christmas trees, greens, pine cones, and live trees, to enjoy in your home for the holidays and then be planted in your garden to grow for years to come.
Spring
Each spring brings new and exciting plant material. Through the winter, we ready for spring a little more each day! We love stocking up on specialty items for Easter Baskets and of course we cannot forget St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday we feel is not only for tasting green beverages, but also a day to celebrate both joy and the friendships in our lives.
Out in our greenhouse, we begin to prepare our incredible spring baskets and mixed annual planters. Stop in and see the magic behind the amazing beauty of them. We carry a large variety of annuals, including everything from your everyday geranium to specialty annuals you won’t find anywhere else. Our greenhouse is also bursting with tropical plants including citrus trees, traditional everyday house plants; peace lily, ficus, palms etc., & succulents as well as a multitude of herbs and terrarium plants and accessories.
Add that special splash of color to your outdoor pots to help rid your home of those winter blues; we have pansies ranging in all colors, as well as a selection of other cool weather annuals.
All of our plant material and trees start coming in around the beginning of March. Be sure to get in early for your spring blooming trees; cherries, dogwoods, plums, etc, and a huge selection of fruiting trees and shrubs; apples, pears, figs, persimmons, berries, grapes, and more! Roses come in around Mother’s Day.
Remember to start your seeds soon. We have a great selection, including flowers, herbs, and vegetables; heirloom tomatoes, and organic seed packets. You’ll also find something a little extra to add to your edible garden this year, a choice of onions, asparagus, garlic, rhubarb, horseradish, and potato bulbs, all eager to take up residence in your garden.
Need a few tips on preparing your lawn for spring? Stop in and take time to chat with us about compro, seeding, and our favorite types of lawn fertilizer. It’s really simple and very rewarding to actually do that lawn work yourself and see results that even hiring a high priced lawn company is not able to give you.
Summer
Summer in Virginia is wonderful but it is a season that challenges our trees, lawns and gardens. The best advice we can give and you can follow during the summer months is:
“Do not forget to water!” Plants ranging from newly planted (including last year’s installations) to well established garden favorites (like that 20 year old cherry gracing your home with gorgeous blooms every spring) will require anything from the occasional drink to the weekly scheduled waterings.
Summer in Virginia also means stink bugs—we have stink bug traps!
Stink Bugs are an extremely aggressive, destructive insect. This newly-arrived pest multiplies quickly and damages our plant crops by way of sucking the juice from the plant, which in turn kills the plant. The stink bug is resistant to and unaffected by many pesticides.
Japanese Beetles are another aggressive pest eating our gardens out from under us.
We are fully stocked each summer with many choices of ammunition against these pests that are destroying your favorite shrubs, trees, and vegetables. Come in and discuss the best choice for your situation. Whether it’s using the traditional beetle trap, get-rid-of-them-now sprays, the preventative route, we have the answers for you and your life style.
Do you have brown spots in your yard? You may have fungus! Stop in with a sample patch or photograph of your lawn. Our lawn experts can diagnose and suggest treatments before you lose more!
If your plants are not doing well and you don’t know why—bring a piece in!
We can help you figure out what is going wrong. Just like the doctor, we need to see the issue; diagnosing over the phone is very hard, often times impossible. Follow these simple steps: grab a sealed plastic bag from the kitchen, or old jar with a lid, and throw a piece of the problem plant or bug in the bag or jar and bring it to us! Try not to leave it in the hot car before bringing it to us; this can cause diagnosing to be extremely difficult for us.
Going on Vacation?
Stop in and see us before you take off! We can help keep your favorite potted plants, both indoor, and on your porch watered for you while you’re off relaxing! Ask us how and we’ll make it work!
